It’s easy to forget that some basic aspects of life we take for granted are a rarity in other parts of the world. You have surely heard of African families having to cross long distances to access water sources. While significant contributions have been made to improve their conditions, there is still a lot of work to be done.

As a matter of fact, the statistics related to access to clean water still remain shocking. According to the World Health Organization, 785 million people lack even a basic drinking-water service, including 144 million people who are dependent on surface water. A basic service is an improved drinking-water source within a round trip of 30 minutes to collect water.

Recent findings also show that globally, at least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with faeces. Contaminated water can transmit diseases such diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and polio. Contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause 485 000 diarrhoeal deaths each year.

This issue is not only still prevalent in 2019, but also expected to keep increasing. Predictions say that by 2025, half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas.

Numbers like these are truly astounding. How are all of these people expected to lead prosperous lives if they can’t even satisfy their most basic needs? Access to clean water is a basic human right no one should be deprived of.

This is a highly worrying issue, one that Trust in Humanity decided to tackle in Bangladesh. While governments and non-governmental organizations have an important role to play, we can’t simply sit by and watch, hoping for the best.
